Recognizing Overuse Injuries

Overuse injuries occur when any biologic tissue, bone, tendon, muscle, or ligament is stressed beyond its physical limit, or is not allowed sufficient time to recover or heal. They can be acute, occurring after a specific activity, or chronic, gradually worsening over time.

Predisposing factors for overuse injuries in performing artists included all of the following:
• Inadequate physical conditioning
• Sudden increases in practice times
• Errors in practice habits
• Errors of technique
• Changes in instrument
• Inadequate rehab of previous injury
• Improper body mechanics and posture
• Stressful nonmusical activities
• Anatomic variations
• Gender
• Quality of instrument
• Environmental factors
