Michael S. Murphy, M.D. |
Dr. Murphy received his surgical orthopaedic
training at New York University/Bellevue in New York City. He then was
a special fellow
in hand and upper extremity
surgeon at the Mayo Clinic/Mayo Foundation in Rochester, Minnesota.
My subspecialty interests include arthritis, arthroscopy, trauma, difficult
fractures and joint reconstruction. My practice is confined to shoulder
through fingertip problems.
Teaching is a very important aspect of my practice. I am very actively
involved in the fellowship and residency program at Union Memorial Hospital,
I serve as Fellowship co-director. I participate in the teaching of outside
individuals from Walter Reed Army Hospital, Georgetown University, and
other outside institutions who rotate through at times.
This vibrant environment fosters independent thought and excellence in
patient management.
The National Hand Center is an epicenter of talented upper extremity
specialists. The quality that all of us aspire to maximizes patient benefit.
Contribution To The Specialty – I have participated in numerous
educational activities, both locally and nationally. I have participated
in multiple presentations for the Orthopaedic Academy and the American
Society for Surgery of the Hand. Topics have included difficult trauma,
joint replacement, vascular problems and multidisciplinary management
of upper extremity problems. I have been a member of the Self Assessment
Review Exam committee. In addition, for the last three years I have been
on the faculty of the Hand Society Review Course in Hand Surgery held
annually in Dallas, Texas. Publications have included problems regarding
tumors, congenital abnormalities of the upper extremity, and wrist instability
problems.
Outside of medicine, I am interested in multiple sports. I am a competitive
long distance swimmer. I have competed in numerous long distance and
short distance running road races. I play paddle tennis and club tennis
as well. I also am very active in Baltimore Youth Hockey, coaching a
bantam hockey team. I am also one of the middle school coaches for Loyola
Blakefield’s ice hockey team. I also enjoy sailing and windsurfing.
My goal at all times is to deliver excellence in patient care.
It is an honor to work with such talented individuals who are constantly
teaching me new and exciting things, as well as reinforcing the basic
principals of our specialty.
I see hand surgery as being a very dynamic field in the areas of reconstruction,
transplantation and joint reconstruction.
All aspects of care at the Hand Center are outstanding. The physicians,
nurses, and therapists all strive to deliver to the patients an outstanding
experience.
