1. Training
Medical school – The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine
Residency – Johns Hopkins Orthopaedic Surgery
Fellowship – The Curtis National Hand Center
2. Your Subspecialty Interests
Arthritis, peripheral nerve, disorders of the hand and wrist.
3. Philosophy on Teaching
I believe that doctors must also be teachers. This enables us to share our
experience with and further educate doctors in training as well as our peers
and to shape the future of our field. We also have a responsibility to teach
our patients how to avoid, prevent, and/or live with certain problems and conditions
that affect the hand and upper extremity.
4. What it means to you to work at the National Hand Center
I consider it a great honor and privilege to work at The National Hand Center,
allowing interaction with the current group of outstanding hand and upper extremity
specialists, having access to state of the art facilities, and being an integral
part of a nationally recognized, leading institution for managing conditions
of the hand and upper extremity.
5. What Contributions you have made to the Specialty
I help teach senior orthopaedic residents about hand surgery and have published
articles concerning osteonecrosis of the elbow and uncommon conditions in the
upper extremity in athletes. I have presented research about elbow replacement
for distal humeral nonunion at national meetings.
6. Interests outside of Medicine Family, including coaching and involvement with various sports activities
with my children, as well as kickboxing and fitness training for myself. In the
past, I enjoyed competitive horseback riding.
7. Dedication to the patient’s experience at the Hand
Center I
believe that a good doctor must not only have superb surgical skills, but
must also make every effort to educate the patient regarding his/her diagnosis,
the alternatives open to the patient, and the likely results. A good doctor
should put his patient as much at ease as possible and should continue to
provide a
positive resource for the patient at all phases of the treatment.
8. Comments about our colleagues/what it is like to work in a large
single specialty
practice
It is a wonderfully unique opportunity to be working with
a large group of outstanding hand specialists, all of whom are top notch
surgeons and leaders
in their particular field. It provides a tremendous resource, not only for
our patients, but also for all of the doctors on staff. Patients clearly
benefit
from the collective intelligence and experience of such a diverse and talented
group of surgeons.
9. Where you see the future of Hand Surgery Going
The need for skilled hand
surgeons will only continue to increase as we become aware of new methods
for managing problems once felt to be untreatable. A group
like that at The National Hand Center pioneers new approaches and improves
upon existing ones, expanding and improving the field.
10. Why it’s important to seek the skills
and experience of a Hand Surgeon for your (patient’s) problem…why
it is important to select our Center Many conditions are unique to the hand and upper extremity and
require very specialized evaluation and treatment that a hand surgeon is
best equipped to
manage. Through training and experience, hand surgeons, particularly those
at The National Hand Center, with their diverse and extensive experience,
are best
able to diagnose and treat hand problems. The cooperation and cohesiveness
between the doctors here assures that all that can and should be done for
a given patient
will be done.
11. What makes us the Premier Hand Specialists in the Nation?
The National
Hand Center has a large group of specialists with excellent training, unparalleled
dedication to patient care, and collectively over 100
years of experience in treating disorders of the hand and upper extremity.
The desire and ability of each doctor here to seek and benefit from the views
and
experience of others regarding the complicated diagnoses, assure that the
patient will get the most complete and best care and treatment possible.
I was fortunate enough to do my Hand Fellowship
at The National Hand Center and believe it to be the best facility of its
kind in the country. It is truly
an honor to be a member of the staff here. |
