Peter C. Innis, M.D. |
1. Training
• Bachelor of Science Cornell University
• Doctor of Medicine John Hopkins School of Medicine
• Internship & Residency Johns Hopkins Orthopedics
• Hand Fellowship Curtis National Hand Center at Union Memorial Hospital
2. Subspecialty Interests
I maintain a broad interest in hand surgery including common problems such as carpal tunnel syndrome, arthritis and tendinitis. I also have an interest in sports and wrist injuries.
3. Philosophy on Teaching
I enjoy teaching what often can not be learned from a book such as courtesy, promptness, efficiency, team work and ethics. I try to teach an approach to medicine and patients rather than a specific procedure or disease.
4. What it means to you to work at the National Hand Center
It is a great honor to be a part of the National Hand Center. I feel the duty and responsibility to continue the great traditions of its founders and my mentors. The congenial academic atmosphere is what makes this Center special.
5. Contributions to Specialty
I would like to think that I have made a difference for many Fellows, Residents, and medical students. Although I have written on a variety of topics from pediatric hand injuries to carpal tunnel syndrome, for the last 10 years much of my time is dedicated to administrative duties within my specialty and for my private group and Union Memorial Hospital.
6. Interests outside of Medicine
My family is my main focus and always comes first. I love working outdoors and being physically active.
7. Dedication to patient’s experience at the Hand Center
With my administrative background, I am constantly striving to make the Hand Center more efficient and customer friendly. We strive for great service and processes to complement our great clinicians.
8. Comments about our Colleagues
It is a privilege to work with such a large and outstanding group of hand surgeons. All of us regularly share our successes and failures openly and honestly. Advice and encouragement is always only a doorway or phone call away.
9. Future of Hand Center
Medicine in general and hand surgery in particular is constantly evolving. However, the basic principals and approach to the patient and disease will not change dramatically. We should continue to see medicinal, therapeutic and surgical advancements (such as minimally invasive techniques).
10. Why is it important to seek the skills and experience of a Hand Surgeon for your problem?
I look at Orthopedics like general construction work. Hand surgeons are the finished carpenters doing the finer and more delicate work. Most people would not hire a handyman to build their kitchen cabinets. I realize one of my responsibilities as a hand specialist at the National Hand Center is to repair or salvage other surgeons’ problems but I would far rather treat the patient primarily and possibly avoid the problem.
11. What makes us the Premier Hand Specialists in the Nation?
We have one of the largest Hand Surgery groups in the world under one roof. Most importantly, we have a group that consistently puts the Hand Center above their personal goals and interests. We have outstanding leadership in Dr. Thomas Graham as well as unwavering support from Union Memorial Hospital and its parent corporation Med Star Health.
