What Are Cumulative Trauma Disorders of the Upper Extremity?
Cumulative trauma disorders of the upper extremity are also called CTDs. CTDs refer to any muscular or bone disorder that occurs in the upper body. Some of these include:
- Carpal tunnel syndrome
- Flexor tendinitis
- Myofascial pain
Some individuals are more at risk for CTDs than others. Those who are at risk include people who do repetitive tasks and those who are under stress. Women may be particularly affected.
Causes of Cumulative Trauma Disorders of the Upper Extremity?
What causes CTDs is a matter for debate. But, it is known there are some things that aggravate the disorders. These include repetitive tasks (like typing), cold temperatures, vibrations, even whether or not you like your job. CTDs are complex disorders that involve both physical and psychological factors.

- Generalized pain
- Tiredness
- Numbness
- A feeling of being swollen in the affected area
Treatment of Cumulative Trauma Disorders of the Upper Extremity?
The first treatment for a CTD is ice and rest for the affected area. When there is less pain, an exercise program can be started. At work, try to do less repetitive tasks.
To help get rid of the CTD, the approach of a healthcare team might be helpful. This might include a physical therapist, a vocational counselor, and an occupational health nurse.
