What Are Bone Tumors?

There are many types of bone tumors, but each is a type of abnormal growth on a bone. Benign bone tumors are not cancerous or often life-threatening. Malignant tumors can metastasize, which means they can spread and grow and get worse. Benign tumors are more common than malignant ones.

Common types of Benign Bone Tumors:
  • Giant cell tumor
  • Osteochondromas
  • Simple bone cyst
Common types of Malignant Bone Tumors:
  • Fibrosarcoma
  • Myeloma
  • Osteosarcoma
Causes of Bone Tumors?

No one knows what causes bone tumors. Some people believe they occur when someone grows quickly. Others think that being exposed to radiation may be a cause. Still others think heredity is a factor.

Symptoms of Bone Tumors?
  • Mild (or constant) bone pain
  • Persistent swelling
  • Fever
  • Weakness
  • Fatigue
Treatment of Bone Tumors?

For some benign tumors, it may be enough just to watch them. Others may need surgery to remove them due to their location and size, which may weaken the bone and be a problem in fracture care. For malignant tumors, often surgery with some other therapy is needed. The type of tumor and where it is located will suggest what other therapy might be called for. Some of them include radiation, chemotherapy, and immunotherapy.
